A brief profile.

Established in 1883 in San Francisco as a wholesale distributor of hardwood lumber, the Higgins Hardwoods group of companies has grown through increase of market share, geographic coverage and product line as well as through acquisition.

• As J. E. Higgins Lumber Company, we operate 18 distribution facilities in California, Nevada and Hawaii, including 22 warehouses and 12 show rooms.
• As Golden State Flooring, Wood Flooring Distributors and Wood Floor Wholesalers, we serve the hardwood flooring contractor and dealers through five hardwood flooring distribution centers.
• As Pella Window & Door Company, we serve the specialty window contractor and high-end home and commercial property owners through ten wood window and door sales and service locations.

We are a key link in the economic chain between the manufacturer and the end user. We inventory the products, break down the units and sell various quantities to a large number of customers. We offer delivery on our own trucks, extend credit terms and provide additional value-added customer service.

Throughout more than a century and a quarter of service to the woodworking industry, the management of Higgins has recognized and accommodated the changing business trends and needs of our customers.

The company’s earliest motto was, “A Lumber for Every Purpose.” Mindful of customers’ needs, “Speedy Service” became the goal during the Great Depression years. More recently, “Higgins is more than Lumber” has defined our business direction.

The slogans changed through the years, but Higgins has kept the intent of each phrase, modifying the focus only slightly.

Still, we strive to offer “A Lumber for Every Purpose,” along with “Speedy Service,” which has never been more important to our customers than it is today.

Over the years, the company has supplied lumber for some of California’s landmark buildings, including the William Randolph Hearst Castle at San Simeon, now a state park; St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Flood Building in San Francisco.

Today, we are . . . “More than Lumber,” with the addition of high quality products like Pella wood windows and doors, hardwood lumber and plywood, hardwood flooring, hardwood mouldings and architectural detail products and some of the newest, environmentally sensitive products sought by our customers.

Today, we are Higgins Hardwoods, offering a broad product line to help our customers be more productive and profitable.
